My sister Jamie, and her husband Josh, started building a home about two years ago. Now, when I say building a home, I don’t mean having someone build a home for them, I mean they literally built it themselves with their bare hands (with help from friends and family – especially Josh’s parents). They hammered in every nail and laid down every floorboard and put up all the insulation…you get the picture. I don’t think Jamie had any idea what they were getting into when they started – haha!
Last December they were able to move in but still had a lot of work to do. Slowly it has been coming together and last week when Lillie and I took a trip up to NH we were excited to see it really was starting to look like a home! I know they are so happy. It has really come together beautifully and they have done an absolutely fabulous job! They still have a lot more decorating to do and as they continue I will post more pictures whenever I travel up to NH (we are going to have Lillie birthday party there in December). For now though, here are a few spaces that are nearing completion:
Here is their dining room. Pretty much everything you see here was either an antique or thrift store find! The wall color is one of my favorites – Alexandria Beige by Benjamin Moore. We used it in our last home and I planning on painting our nursery for our new wee one this color.
Here is an old toolbox Jamie found at an antique shop and it is sitting on a burlap runner she made. The dining room table they are using is really pretty but they are actually planning on moving it to another room as soon as they find an old farmhouse table to put in here. When they do I will show some pictures of that.
This little rocking chair was Josh’s when he was a boy.
The kitchen isn’t completely done yet but here are some pictures of what is finished so far! I love the finishes they did!
Here are a couple of pictures I stole from Jamie of her window sill above her kitchen sink.
A couple kitchen close-ups.
The entry from the garage into the kitchen/dining room. I love how it turned out. I really can’t wait to show you the main entryway but it isn’t quite done so it will have to wait for now. It is going to be absolutely gorgeous though!
I adore the double front doors!!!!!
And here is a picture of Jamie and Josh with my munchkin from this summer.
That’s it for now. I can’t wait to show you more, though, as they finish each room!

OH MY GOSH!!! Amazing! I Love the color and the idea of using antiques and thrift store items!!
What a lovely home! Can't wait to see more!
I'm in LOVE with this house!
I came here from Tatertots & Jello…and I'm definitely now a follower.
Oh that house is gorgeous! So elegant and full of beautiful details. What a talented pair, those two!
Wow, the dining room does look pretty if I do say so myself! I guess it must be the photographer! ;)….And I would say Josh's parents built it with their bare hands, with help from our completely clueless and inexperienced selves! haha! -Jamie
Gorgeous!! They really have an eye for decorating 🙂 I love the mix of old and new too. What is the color of the paint on the walls in the kitchen if I may ask? I love that grey against the white cabinets!!

Jason – I actually had several jokes about your involvement but I figured you would just make fun of how not funny they were so I didn't bother =)
Lolo – I am pretty sure the kitchen color is also Alexandria Beige. If you are looking for a grayish brown I highly recommend Ashley Gray by Benjamin Moore. I used it in my kitchen and it is my favorite!!!!! It is the perfect mix between gray and brown.
you are so talented~ great stuff! I found you through tatertots and jello. grizzlywulff@hotmail.com
I am in love with that little birds nest with the tiggy pumpkin over it. Darling!
Your home and blog is amazing! So glad I found it from TT&J!
Your sisters home is coming along beautifully! I love all of the serene colors!
So when can you come to my house???
Her house is gorgeous! I know yall are in VA and not too far from Smithfield…if you ever get the chance to come to the area, check out Wharf Hill Antiques in downtown Smithfield-you will LOVE it! You're houses are like they are just out of this shop! They have a website, but it definitely doesn't do it justice. I promise you'll love it!
Oh the house is just darling – too perfect! We are about to embark on building our own – so I'm looking forward to more beautiful pictures!
Love your blog. I have been spying for about a month but had to comment today. I got so excited when I read "started building a home about two years ago… with their bare hands…with help from friends and family…They hammered in every nail…" And that is because it reminded me of my husband and me. We have not yet moved in, but the day is getting so close! Your sister's house is beautiful and I will be happy if ours turns out even half as lovely. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more.
Beautiful! I always love your decor pics. Ahh… to be a young married couple and have a lovely home again! I really struggle with that with two high energy kiddos who have literally pulled the curtain rods off the wall on multiple occasions! Their story is inspiring. I have always wanted to gut an old farm house, though I would be perfectly content to pay someone to hammer the nails! 😉
I am coming over from Tatertots and Jello, I am in love with your Etsy shop! Great designs!
There home is really beautiful. Love the dining room with his little rocker!
Beautiful couple and a beautiful home…..& so clean. I am so jealous!! With 2 kiddos, my house is often littered in toys.
I love the doors they used. I'm taking down supply ideas because hopefully we will embark on our own building adventure soon. Do you know where they got them?
The doors are from a company called Simpson (door #2130), and are fir. We stained them dark walnut Minwax and then polyurethaned them. You can't order directly from Simpson, so you'd have to find a place near you that sells Simpson doors. Good luck if you do decide to build!

Do you know what paint color was used on the kitchen cabinets? They are very pretty and look nice against the wall color as well!
Anonymous – I'm not sure what color they are because they actually came pre-painted, but I do know they are planning on painting over them at some point because they have a bit too much of a yellow undertone for that room.
Where did you get the apothecary jars? Love them and can't seem to find the just right size. Those are perfect.
I checked with Jamie, and she got the glass jars from Michael's and the numbered ceramic jars on clearance from Target a while back.
