Hello! The past couple of weeks I’ve been working on giving our laundry room a little makeover. It was a nice size – probably the largest laundry room we’ve had, although is a little bit awkwardly (I shared a video on Instagram which is saved in our highlights if you want to see the layout better). My goal in here was to help make it a bit more functional for us and more visually appealing for a few hundred dollars.
Here is a before shot from the doorway:
And here is that same angle now:
The first thing I did was take down the cabinets. Although typically I LOVE having cabinets in a laundry room these ones were not very deep at all and therefore not all that practical, and I didn’t like their placement in the middle of the wall, but moving them up would have made them difficult to reach. I considered replacing them entirely but decided against that for a few different reasons, and decided to ulilize some other storage solutions. (You can see our laundry room makeover in our last house here, and the house before that here).
Here’s a “during” shot of the washer/dryer area straight on:
Here is that same angle now:
I’ll show a video on instagram so you can see it better, but behind that little curtain is a metal roll-out cart that holds more detergent, dryer sheets, and a bunch of cleaning type supplies that aren’t really all that pretty to look at so they are nice and tucked away there. I kept the prettier supplies out on the counter like this bleach alternative (which I LOVE and use regularly!) and this stain remover.
Then over on the other wall there was this kind of odd little closet area with a rod but then otherwise just a lot of unused space:
I kept the rod back in there and added a shelf on top of it and then added some more shelves over on the left and a bunch of hooks over on the right:
It’s hard to tell in this picture but we keep our vacuum and mops in the back left area so they are tucked away but still easily accessible.
Sorry – this before picture is a mess – I forgot to take a before picture of this angle before I started clearing things out of the other areas of the room so everything was just sort of dumped here. But at least you can get a feel for it.
And here’s a during shot where I had started painting the first coat of white on the upper half of the room:
And here is that spot now:
I usually remove the sidesplash when I am updating a space but this one did not want to budge and I would have had to do some major wall repair so after playing around with it a bit I decided to just leave it – this area is behind the door and really only visible if you are actually in the laundry room doing laundry.
One thing we have done for almost ten years now is have a small laundry basket for each of us – when clean clothes come out of the dryer we just stand right there and fold and put each persons stuff right into their basket. Obviously, every family is different but this system has worked really well for us over the years. The counter is just a piece of plywood trimmed out.
I used wooden pegs throughout the space for added storage for things like hand brooms, feather dusters, scissors, and even our ironing board.
The paneling in here is faux – it’s just a line I made every six inches with a sharpie – haha! Up close you can tell but unless you get up close it can fool the eye pretty easily. My husband and girls all thought it was paneling until I told them to go up and look really closely!
