Good afternoon! I hope you all are having a lovely weekend. After completing my DIY range hood cover earlier this month I knew the next project I wanted to tackle was a DIY Kitchen Hutch with Scalloped Trim for our kitchen so that way I could have the majority of my kitchen and dining area projects complete! (My last big project in this space will be to add beams over the dining nook as that ceiling is higher but I don’t plan on doing that for a while). Here’s a little reminder of what the kitchen looked like the first time we saw this house:

And here it is now:DIY Kitchen Hutch with Scallop

I started looking for a hutch for the space where the cabinetry ended as soon as we made an offer on this house. I  knew that dead space would drive me crazy. I couldn’t do a sideboard with a mirror because I  have a chest with a mirror above it over in the living room and it’s all one big open space so I  knew that would look repetitive and I needed a tall cabinet or hutch to go here on this wall.
The hard part was ideally I wanted a piece that was around 8 feet tall (so a little lower than the cabinets but still visually in that same height area) and finding a piece that height that was reasonably priced was not an easy task. I  regularly checked Facebook Marketplace in hopes of finding a vintage piece or something that I could transform and I found several good options both there and new that were 6-7 feet tall but no such luck with something closer to 8 feet tall.
Once I finished building the hood I  really wanted to have the whole kitchen feel more complete so I gave up trying to find the right piece and decided I could build one. Initially I     thought I’d build it from scratch but then realized I  could probably find a sideboard or chest for the base and then just build the upper part. Sure enough after just two days of hunting I    found this base piece at our local outlet and it was discounted more than 80% off! It was missing it’s legs and needed some work on the interior shelf but otherwise was in great shape and was a really sturdy, well-built piece!
The first thing I did was add some inexpensive legs from Lowe’s and fixed the interior shelf with new brackets. Then I got to work building the frame out of plywood for the upper part. I was able to use mostly pieces left over from previous projects although I did need to get one new piece of plywood for the back.

Then I primed and painted it (Succulent by Sherwin Williams) and then added some trim pieces to finish it off including this adorable scalloped trim that I got here. Then I did a lot of wood filling and sanding.

And then painted it all again and here it is:DIY Kitchen Hutch with Scallop DIY Kitchen Hutch with Scallop
