Good morning! Today I am going to share some pictures of our new living room with the freshly painted black built-in bookshelves flanking the fireplace. This room is the one in our new home that is closest to being finished. There are few minor things we will be changing (like eventually we will go with a larger coffee table in here and use this in a conversation area in the room adjacent to this one, and we are still waiting for the tufted sofa to be recovered, and I’d like to add picture lights to the top of the bookshelves, as well as a few other things) but overall this room is pretty close to where we want it!
For this room it was really just painting, swapping the fan for a chandelier and then adding in our furniture and accessories. I initially planned on reworking some of the trim on the bookshelves but decided to go ahead and just paint them to start with and now that they are painted I don’t know if I will bother to rework them anymore. To paint them I first did one coat of tinted primer (you can see a shot of that in our stories highlights on instagram titled “New House”) and then three coats of Black Magic by SW in a satin finish. I then let it cure for a little over a week before putting any of the items back into the bookshelf. I also swapped out the knobs for these ones.

We knew we wanted to go with two sofas in this space but didn’t want to have to buy two new ones so we decided to use this tufted one and then pair it with a leather one. My husband has been wanted either a leather sofa or leather chairs for years. With that in mind, once we knew we were moving and knew we were going to purchase a leather sofa for this house I started the hunt for one. I had my heart set on this leather one, but my family thought this one would be much more comfortable and the fact that it shipped quickly (it was delivered just one week after we ordered it!) was a HUGE factor seeing how the one I wanted isn’t even in stock right now. So, in theory function won out over form initially. But I have to admit, once it arrived I actually think the coloring of it looks so pretty in here and it really is comfortable and I love the clean lines of it to balance the tufting of the one opposite it so I think it ended up being a win/win for all of us!
If you notice there are two sets of white wingback chairs in these photos it’s because we are still playing a little bit of musical furniture in the house!
I was a bit nervous to go with black built-in bookshelves but once I started painting them I could see what I had in mind start coming to life and was so glad I went for it!
If you are on the fence about black built-in bookshelves I highly recommend going for it!
