painting a dresser

Good morning! Although I am still waiting on our new light fixture for our bedroom to arrive to take all photos of this room I thought I would share a little peek of the room and a quick little makeover I gave to one of our dressers. This dresser is one of my favorite pieces. It was in our entryway in our last house but when we moved here there really wasn’t a good spot for it. I thought it might fit in Lola’s room but no luck there. Then I was hoping it might work in the guest room but again no luck there. In our bedroom there are two large walls and one has our bed on it and the other one has our wood dresser from Bassett and it didn’t fit on the third wall due to the bedroom door and closet door placement, so that only left this wall with the windows. I really didn’t want to put it here initially because I wanted to do a little seating area in this window. However, I also really wanted to hold onto this dresser and I didn’t have extra chairs to go in here yet anyway, so figured I would just work with what I do have and go ahead and put this dresser in this window.

In our room I am using mostly dark chocolate and dark olive as my main colors balanced out with white and cream colors. With that in mind this blueish gray color didn’t really work.

I would normally have been very hesitant to paint it though, because it was such a pretty piece. However, last Christmas some little scent sticks I had melted onto the top and damaged it so I was going to have to sand down the top anyway. (I have actually been using those scent sticks for years and never had that problem so not sure if it was just a defected set or something, but either way it damaged the top quite a bit.) I had been covering those spots with books and accessories but knew I really wanted to sand them down and properly fix them so now was the time! Here is one photo of the damage – there were several different spots like this on the top of the dresser:

I sanded them down and the primed it and then painted it Steelyard Common by SW in a matte finish.

I still want to add some gold rub and buff to the handles so they pop out a bit more with the new paint color but this goes much better in the room now and gives us some additional storage which is always nice!

As usual, good old Teddy decided to make his way into my pictures. I tried to tell him if he was going to be in the photos it would be nice if he would sit up or at least lift his head up a bit so he didn’t look like he was “playing dead” but he didn’t seem to want to listen – haha! He also didn’t want to move, so don’t mind him!
