Good morning! I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend! Today I wanted to share some of the changes we’ve made to our kitchen to help it feel a bit more custom. First, I should mention the before was a wonderful new kitchen that there was absolutely nothing wrong with. As I mentioned in another post we were on a bit of a time crunch during this move south and didn’t have much luck when it came to finding what we were looking for in a house (we were looking for an older, fixer-upper with lots of character) but this house was available in our timeline and we really LOVED the layout. We loved the open feeling of the kitchen and the large island and knew it would be a great space for us. So for this house it’s a little different than our last couple of houses. We aren’t going to be doing any major overhauls. We are just looking to add some touches that help make it look a little more custom and a little less “builder grade” if that makes sense.

Here is the before:

Because the ceilings were so high we thought it would help if we added a hood. We found a local contractor to build us a simple one and love how it turned out. I do want to add a bit more to it at some point (possibly some metal strips or a little more trim, but I want to live with it like this for a bit before I decide). And then we had to redo the backsplash once the cabinets came down. We went with a 2 by 8 subway tile in a herringbone pattern and are so happy with how it turned out. I am planning on eventually painting all of the cabinets (probably the same color as the island but haven’t decided that for sure yet) and think the white backsplash will be a great contrast to that. Then I changed out the hardware and chose a new faucet to help add some finishing touches. I’d like to add a sconce to either side of the hood but am still deciding on that. So, even though I am not completely done I am really happy with the changes we’ve made so far and feel like it makes a big difference in the overall feel of the space.

Here are some wide angled shots of the room:

We have absolutely LOVED these bar stools from Serena and Lily. I love how they look and my girls love how they twist. They have been such a hit!

This room is almost finished. I do want to swap out the existing door over by the fireplace for a Dutch door at some point and we’ve got a little bit of musical furniture that’s going to happen in the next month or two but it feel so nice having all of the big projects crossed off in here!

I think it’s always fun to have a piece of art in the kitchen. We had a vintage oil painting on the counter in the kitchen at our last house and I really like how this piece works here. I ordered it for our master bedroom but seeing how I still haven’t done much in there yet I tried it here and I think this may be where it stays.

We found these cute little dog food stands and Ruby and Teddy both love them!
