I think we finally have a room that is feeling “finished”. Well, that’s probably a bit of a stretch seeing how I don’t think a room is ever finished, but all the main components are in here now. I am sure it will continue to evolve (for instance I still need to paint the legs on the sectional, I probably will paint the coffee table base a darker color and we eventually may get the gray cover for the sectional and I am sure if we live here long enough we will end up painting the again, haha!), but for now it’s nice to feel like a room is complete. The last few things we added in here were the rug, some pillows for the chairs, and switching out the ottoman for the coffee table.
The
rug was on sale at Rugs USA and had free shipping. I can defend a lot of the white in our home because just about all of it can be thrown in the wash, however I can’t really defend this one and will admit that I probably am a little crazy for getting such a light colored rug for a room that we pretty much spend all of our time in. I loved the pattern so much and the color was perfect and with the huge sale and free shipping I couldn’t resist. Hopefully this decision won’t come back to haunt me too soon…
We swapped the coffee table that we put in the playroom for the ottoman that was here. I think I may eventually paint the base a slightly darker color. You can see the before shots of that coffee table
here and
how we transformed it.
One of my favorite new additions to the room are these striped pillows my mom made for me. I felt like this end of the room needed a fun little pop and I love how these pillows provide that. I also love how they tie this side of the room together with the kitchen seeing how I used that same fabric my mom got me to cover the bench that’s in there.
And for any of you that are new here, here is a before and after from each angle.

I love the rug Jen…it really ties the room together! It's all starting to come together and I know there have been times you thought the painting would never end but I knew you'd make your new home just as beautiful as your townhouse. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the "afters"!
Lovely rug, looks great. The room looks great!
I think you made a great decision in picking out that rug…it looks wonderful in there…I would just invest in a shampoo vacuum if the time comes 😉 Your house looks like it came out straight out of a magazine, still amazed at the transformation you have quickly done in there.
Having a 'no shoes' rule in a home does wonders.
Fondly-Lisa
The rug is perfect! I do understand being nervous about it though. I have 3 young girls and all my furniture is white or cream slipcovers. Just two days ago my 19 month old coloured on my chair with black pen….I managed to get it out! The whole room is gorgeous.,
Thanks! And haha – we had in incident with a red crayon not too long ago but fortunately it just took a little scrubbing and came out too!
I like the rug. That pattern is great and so is color. The pillows your mom made are perfect. It brings pattern to that side of the room without saying "look at me." haha.
I really love your style and you pull it off so effortlessly. Wish I could do the same.
It's gorgeous! I've been eyeing a similar rug myself. It has the same pattern but all one color…white! I really love how the fireplace looks. Well, love all of it.
It looks beautiful! I've been eyeing a similar rug and wondering if it will hold up with my brood. At least yours was on sale!
That room rocks!
I love how a rug completes a room…and this room looks beautiful!
Fabulous room Jennifer.
Hugs, Gee
Love it! This rug is the perfect touch =)
Lovely!
It's hard to believe you've only been there a short time…you've completely transformed your family room and kitchen! It looks so fresh and updated, and the rug definitely gives it the cozy factor!
I love, love, love the rug and pillows. I too have a love for white furniture, despite having a 4 year old and two dogs. After 2 years my 8×10 rug is more light gray than white 🙁 I don't regret buying it though. I still love it and will probably just have it dyed a darker color to cover up all the stains that won't come out.
Scotch guard the rug!! Asap!!
Hi Jennifer! Love the room so much! I had a couple of questions…what color is your kitchen table…I see the chairs are a kind of bright white but hard to tell the table color. Also, are you happy with the IKEA sectional. I just bought the Ektorp sectional and while I love the price and the look I have been obsessing over the comfort just a bit and was wondering if it was just me cause I am comparing it to my Arhaus sofa 🙂 ;). Anyway, just wanted to get your feedback. I too am planning on getting the gray slipcover because with two young boys it has already gotten dirty and it hasn't even been a week yet…sigh. Thanks!
Sorry – I missed this somehow, Angie! I am not sure what color it is – I painted it in a huge hurry last fall when I moved it out onto the porch at our last house and used leftover paint – it was either Revere Pewter or Gray Owl I just can't remember which and looking at it doesn't help either because I have a piece that's Gray Owl in the room and Revere Pewter and it doesn't quite look like either – haha! I would lean towards saying Revere Pewter but not positive.
Actually one of the things that factored in for us in deciding between the Ektorp and Karlstad was the comfort level. There were several other factors too, but we thought the Karlstad was quite a bit more comfortable, but I know that could just be personal preference.
So fresh and clean and organized. Must feel good to wake up in the morning and pass through and enjoy your beautiful kitchen and living room!
Oh Jennifer, the rooms looks absolutely dreamy! Makes me want to throw everything out and start from scratch:) I absolutely love it. We desperately need a sectional for our family room and have been debating for a while on the quality of the Ikea sofa's.
The room looks so cosy now its finished, you must be so pleased with the result!…Sounds like you got a great deal on the rug!…xv

Absolutely gorgeous! The neutral colors palette is beautiful. Love the rug too!
The rug really ties everything together! It looks great! Thank you for sharing the transformation of your house. You are doing a beautiful job. Your blog is an inspiration!
Amazing transformation!!!!
Wow, that is gorgeous!!! You have done such amazing things in your beautiful home, Jen!

Amazing transformation! Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for sharing!
Unbelievable before and after! The rug is soooo perfect, and i am madly in love with the striped pillows. If the rug is synthetic I know something that will clean any spot or spill… it's called "Folex" , if it's wool i don't know, but whatever… it is too wonderful, i'm sure it will be fine… it looks absolutely beautiful. The room is amazing

Absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for the inspiration!

It looks perfect! I would almost be scared to sit in that room for fear I could mess something up. You must be very proud. Now, come do mine!
The whole room transformation is just AMAZING!! I love all of it and the rug looks fantastic! You have such a good eye for decor.
~Stephanie
It is just beautiful! I hope you have many great times at your 'new' place.
Lovely! So serene and relaxing.
Gorgeous! You must be so pleased, proud and happy to see this transformation on your main floor space- into your own taste. You did such a beautiful job tie'ing the rooms together! We have a very similar space with our kitchen looking into our family room, since having removed our kitchen upper cabinets that had blocked the two spaces. You are wonderful noting your sources, however I am curious if you could please note where the curtain panels & rods are from. I thought I searched before when you mentioned penny's in your previous home and could not determine which and I thought I read ikea, but cannot recall if that was this blog or another decorating blog I check. I am curious as we have two sets (four windows total), longer windows in front of two window benches in our family room & have been trying to figure out something to hang on the ends of the two outer windows with a rod above all four. Thank you for mentioning the rug size!
It look perfect! I like this natural colours, simple and original decoration.
Hi Jennifer, Wow, the room is gorgeous and the rug is perfect! The before and after pictures are incredible.
I LOVE that rug! It is the perfect addition to your beautiful room!
-Shelley
This is a beautiful space !! I love the rug and that's going to be my next purchase <3
Gorgeous! I've been in my home three years and it's not anywhere close to being this finished! I'm jealous you got this rug -I ordered it with a matching runner and was then told it was out of stock so I went with a different rug (although still have this runner in my hallway)! Its just as gorgeous as I thought it would be… *le sigh*
Our family room rug is the same colors & from Rugs USA as well. With three littles in the house, it has held up beautifully & easily wiped clean with a swipe or two of a Costco baby wipe. I have photos on my house tour if you're interested.
Beautiful room…wishing your family many years of happy memories in it!
Fantastic!! Inspiring!! Love the before and afters, really shows off how much work you did, and it really looks wonderful!
Love the rug and the color scheme. I used gray in several rooms of my home and it is such a beautiful neutral. Beautifully done!
I love the rug! I've been looking for something similar for my dining room. I wonder if they ship to Canada… 🙂
Love the rug but word of warning… make a "no shoes" rule or you will be crying yourself to sleep in just a couple of months!! Unfortunately, I know…now granted…we have a group of college students in our house every Tuesday for a few hours so maybe theres more traffic than normal…but I bought a pale gray rug and the traffic lines were glaringly obvious in a painfully short amount of time. Maybe youd be good to go without wearing shoes??
Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately we are a shoes on kind of family, though. I have what I refer to as "old lady feet" and put my sneakers on the moment I wake up and then don't take them off until right before I crawl in bed (Jon thinks this is weird but I often put my sneakers back on after I put my pajamas on at night – haha!) So, seeing how I always have mine on it would feel weird making other people take theirs off. We have college kids over pretty regularly too and with Lillie and Lola I am sure we will have our share of accidents and just wear and tear show on the rug but I am pretty easy going about that kind of stuff. We had a cream colored rug in our front room at our last house (and now it's in our study) and it has some stains on it but I am okay with that.
The good thing is if it does become too much of a problem with this rug I will just move it up to our master bedroom – we have the perfect spot for it up there. =)
Can you tell me where you got the geometric pillow on your couch. Thanks!
j.
love your rug and the funny comment about wearing your shoes even after you put on your pajamas haha
Hi Jennifer! I had another question. I am looking to replace the chandeliers that are in my den and was considering a few different options such as the burlap drum shade pendant from PB but then realized that it was too tall for my room as I only have 8 foot ceilings. It appears that you too only have 8 foot ceilings too in your living room??? and I was noticing your drum shade pendants that you indicated you got from Lowes. One of my questions is was a low ceiling a factor in choosing your Valencia fixture and then also does it put off enough light? I will be coming from 2 5-arm chandeliers so there is plenty of light. I was concerned both with the PB drum shade as well as the Lowe's one that enough light will not be put off. The Valencia fixture appears to have a bottom on it so the bulbs are not only blocked by the shade itself but the bottom as well? I am having a very hard time finding something I want…..
Yes, ours are only 8 feet as well =(. It puts off enough light for us but we also have sconces, a lamp and then lighting over in the kitchen and I don't necessarily like lights to be too bright so it was the perfect amount of light for what we were looking for. If you are looking for something really bright I probably wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't necessarily consider it a dim light either – kind of medium I would say.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful room and your new rug. I just now ordered the same rug. Just couldn't resist free shipping + BLACK FRIDAY 70% (yes, seventy percent) off! This may be my bargain of the year.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful room and your new rug. I just ordered this exact rug, simply because I could not resist free shipping + BLACK FRIDAY 70% ( yes, seventy percent) off! This may be my best bargain of the year.
Gorgeous! He is a thought re: sofa legs. Why don't you stain them grey?
Would love an update on the rug. It would look great in my living room but with a 2 year old and a husband that is not good about taking shoes off, I wonder how it will look after a few months. Are you happy with it?
It does get a little dirty, but it doesn't really bother me too much. We have loved it!
Wow It is so nice to live in an home like this! I so loving the design of the living room. Hope that my Manila condominium has a living room like as beautiful and calm like what is on the photo. 🙂
This is a great room! I am currently decorating room that looks similar in size–mind sharing the dimensions of your room? Is the rug a 9×12? It looks great! Thanks.
Thanks, Elise! I'm not 100% positive, but I think it is 7×9.
I am planning on purchasing this same rug! Can you tell me how it has held up over the past year? Also, do you think it needs a pad underneath?
Hi, Alayna! Ours has held up well. We didn't need to use a pad, and I don't believe my parents did either (they also have it in their home).
Awesome, thank you!
Wow, what a room transformation! Looks beautiful! And, I love that rug!!!
Hi Jennifer! Because I love how your family room looks so much, I am planning on getting the Karlstad sectional tomorrow but was hoping you could help me make my final decision. I know you love it so that's reassuring as far as comfort and style. Are you still planning on switching out the white sleepovers for gray? Also did you end up painting or staining the legs? Those are my only two concerns. I love the white but will it hold up with my busy family of 4 kids and not sure how the legs are going to look in my family room. Thanks!
Thanks, Laura! I do still think we will switch to the gray eventually (we just haven't gotten around to it yet), and we haven't done anything to the legs yet but we painted the legs on our tufted chairs (they were the exact same color as the Karlstad legs), and we love the way they turned out!
I did notice the legs on your tufted chairs were painted. What did you use? They did come out great! Thanks!
Thanks! You can find the details in this post: http://dearlillieblog.blogspot.com/2013/04/living-room.html
Thank you!!
I am in love with this room & have been considering getting this rug for months :-/ Would you consider the pattern to be more of a grey or beige color? Every picture I find looks diffrent! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you! Although I would technically consider it a gray, it is a very beige gray vs a blueish gray.
Hi Jennifer! Just ran across your blog through Pinterest. Beautiful before and after! I am looking for a sectional and just wondered if you are still loving yours and how you rate the comfort lever after living with it for a couple of years?

Hi! Jenni never had any complaints about that sofa (you can't find a sectional anywhere for that price!), but they did donate it when Arhaus sent them a new sofa.

Hi, I'm sketching my future home and I will have a kitchen, dining, living combo like that and I'm trying to figure dimensions. I love your layout of your kitchen! Would you mind to email me the length and width of the entire combo at whatwouldjesuschristdo@yahoo.com
I would really appreciate it!!
Hi! Would you mind sharing the dimensions of that room? I am curious how many feet there are from the edge of the kitchen counter to the fireplace and how wide the room is. Thank you so much!
