budget bathroom

Good evening! This week I have been plugging away on three different projects including making over our main bathroom. One thing that was tricky moving into a new house vs. an older one was the fact that I knew it would be wasteful and not financially wise to redo the bathrooms even though they weren’t particularly my taste. First let me emphasize they are perfectly wonderful bathrooms and I am so very thankful for them. This one is really good-sized! The finishes just weren’t what I necessarily would have chosen so I wanted it to feel a bit more like “us” and also to coordinate a bit more with our bedroom. Because everything in here was brand new I felt like it would be very wasteful to gut this space and put in a more custom vanities and redo the shower. Plus, as far as resale value goes it wouldn’t make sense to do that either so with that in mind I just went with a very basic cosmetic makeover. I initially was going to go with board and batten on the lower portion of the walls and a wallpaper above that (similar to what we’ve done in some other spaces in this house) but all of the wallpapers I liked for this space were pretty expensive so instead I decided to just paint the walls and instead do a pattern on the floor with some peel and stick tiles because the cost for those was 1/7 of what it would have cost me for the wallpaper. Those just finally got delivered yesterday though and I haven’t installed them yet so this is an “almost finished after” not a true before and after post. And I am waiting until I have the flooring installed to decide if I  want to add board and batten or not to the lower half the wall or not.

Here is what the bathroom looked like before we had moved in:

And here it is now with just paint and some simple cosmetic changes:

And from this angle you can see how much better it looks with our bedroom now!

Can you spy Teddy on the bed? He’s almost blending in with the bolster – haha!

I don’t have a good photo of it but I just hung a curtain rod in front of the shower and these curtains to kind of help “hide” the shower a bit. I pull them closed each day and then just open them and open the door when we shower. I wasn’t sure if it would be a pain or not but because of the way this shower is it hasn’t been an issue at all!

One of the ways to get the biggest “bang for your buck” when it comes to a bathroom makeover in my opinion is to replace the large builder mirrors with smaller framed ones! I think that right away makes a big impact in making a bathroom feel more personal and you can often find mirrors for great prices! If you could only make two changes I would recommend paint and swapping mirrors and both of those really will help change the feel of a bathroom for very little cost.

Some of the inexpensive changes I made in here were to print out some artwork and add them to frames that I already owned. You can find both of these available as downloads from this great little Etsy shop. The top one is here and the bottom one is here.

I’ve had this little pictures of the girls in my bathroom for years now. I love looking at their sweet little baby faces every day!

I have been using these toothbrushes for a few years now and love them!

The prices change regularly but I got these faucets for $66 and I love how they really update the whole sink area!

I found these towel holders on Etsy and love them! I am not usually a fan of towel holders but when I stumbled across these I was sold!

The mirrors were each $100 when I purchased them and for this size I was really pleased with them. They are very thin which was something I needed because of how large the sconces were. The sconces were my one big splurge and I love them so much. I think they really help personalize this space!

I also changed out the doorknobs to these more vintage style ones which I love. They were super easy to install and so far I’ve been really impressed with them! Eventually I’d like to do this throughout the whole house!

Well, that’s it for today! I’ll share more photos once I install the flooring and have the true “after” shots!
