Good morning and Happy Saturday! Last week I shared a video on how to make some simple hydrangea cupcakes and also one on how to make some basic rosette cupcakes and today I wanted to share a video tutorial on making the tulip ones!
First, let me just say, the tulip ones are the ones that I think are the ones that fool the eye the most. I think that the rosettes and hydrangeas look relatively easy in comparison to the other ones and they really are! The buttercream garden roses/peonies and the mums definitely look more time intensive and they most definitely are. They take a good bit of time and practice to get right. The tulips though, are the ones that trick you! They look intricate like the peonies but they are really pretty much just as easy as the hydrangeas and rosettes!
It looks like quite a bit of detail goes into them, but in reality the piping tip does all the work! This the the Russian piping tip set I bought and it has so many great options in it. It also comes with a leaf tip so you don’t need to purchase one separately. If you already have some Russian piping tips though from somewhere else and do need a leaf tip this is one I also use.
And then the two little bits of advice that are the exact same as what I mentioned in the hydrangea tutorial post. First, I would recommend making your buttercream a bit on the stiff side for the tulips (not so stiff that you can’t squeeze them out, but stiff enough that they hold their shape). As I have mentioned before, I just make basic American buttercream (and I am afraid I don’t really use a recipe or really even measure for that, I just whip together cold butter, powdered sugar, a hint of vanilla and a few splashes of milk to get it to a consistency I like) When I am icing a cake it’s easier to work with when it’s a little on the creamier side but for the tulips the shape will hold better if it’s a little more on the stiff side.
And then the second tip I have is to give them a bit more of a realistic look you can do them in two tones. You can see how to do that in the video. And it’s definitely not necessary! I’ve made them in just one color tone, but I think it’s a nice touch to give them a little variation in color. In this video I mixed a medium pink, a light pink and then kept some plain (cream). My plan was to do some with medium pink outside petals and light pink towards the center as well as some with light pink outside petals and the cream color towards the center but I mostly just ended up going with the light and cream combo and didn’t use much of the medium.
Here is the video:
And here you can see them on some more cupcakes and mini cakes:
You can find more info on these cakes above in this post here.
