Hello! I hope you are having a wonderful Labor Day Weekend. I’ve been working on our small mudroom (or back entryway/hallway) and laundry room which is right off this space and today I am going to share the small mudroom part and tomorrow I will share the laundry room. In our last house I added some Shaker pegs to our laundry room and absolutely loved them. Seeing how we only were able to enjoy that space for a few months I wanted to do the same thing in this house (and hopefully we will get to enjoy it a bit longer – haha!) This space isn’t quite done. I got torn on whether I wanted to do a board and batten treatment, or go with beadboard, so decided to leave that for now and will come back to it down the road. There are so many projects for me to tackle in this house and I don’t want to end up making more work for myself by having to undo decisions I made in a rush (like the paint color in here which I will explain in a minute) so for now I haven’t done the wall treatment but will come back to it at some point.
Because we have the lockers in our dining room (not what I would have chosen to do, but for now they are staying because they are very functional), this area really doesn’t have to store a whole lot. That being said it is a space we walk through many many times a day because that door on the left brings us out to the garage so this is the main point of entry for our family. With that in mind, the main thing I knew I wanted to add was a small bench so we could sit if necessary to put on or take off our shoes, and as a temporary spot to set things on when loading or unloading things from the car and then I wanted to add a bunch of pegs so that in the fall and winter we could hang things like hats and scarves. Other than that though, this space really just acts a passageway. You can see the step-by-step process of this makeover in here in our Instagram highlights.
Here is our small mudroom when we moved in:
And here is our small mudroom now:
My only regret in this space is the color. I had my heart set on doing a green in here and the laundry room for a few different reasons but partially because I wanted the laundry room to look different from our last few laundry rooms which have been a dark blue color (you can see them here, here and here). I had painted several sample swatches on the wall and was torn between two of them and asked my girls their opinion and neither of them liked any of the green options and they both said their favorite was the one blue option. So rather spur of the moment I switched gears and bought the blue color and as soon as I started painting I regretted it (and regretted asking them – haha! I don’t know what I was thinking – they both have a very specific reason for disliking green, so I should have known they wouldn’t like the green options!) By the time I started painting that evening I immediately knew I didn’t want this color (even though I do LOVE blue and think this particular shade is beautiful, it just wasn’t what I had in mind for this space), but at that point the paint store was closed so I just kept on painting. I do think somewhere down the road I will repaint it but for now at least I like the space much more than when we moved in!
I really love this flush mount! I think it’s one of my favorite flush mounts I’ve ever used!
I’ll be back tomorrow with our laundry room makeover which ties in with our small mudroom, but in the meantime, you can check out some of the other spaces in our new home in these posts:
